Sounds of Latin music and the smell of Latin cuisine drew Huntsville Center employees to the cafeteria Oct. 30 to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Keynote speaker, José E. Sánchez, P.E., Senior Executive Service and director, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, Mississippi, spoke to the month’s theme of Hispanic Americans: Energizing Our Nation’s Diversity.
Angel Rodriguez and the Son D'Madison Latin Orchestra played Latin rhythms of Salsa, Meringue, Bossa Nova and Bolero, while John Morey, a local Salsa Instructor, showed us how to "dance to the music."
The Hispanic Heritage Planning Committee, led by Yazmine Gerousis, coordinated the Latin food tasting following the formal ceremony.
“Activities are designed to enhance cross-cultural awareness and promote harmony among all military members, their families, and the civilian workforce,” said Angela Morton, Huntsville Center’s Equal Employment Opportunity Officer. “These activities are extensions of the Equal Opportunity education and training objectives. The focus of the observance is directed toward education, interaction and recognition.”
During the Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, Hispanic Heritage Month event earlier in October, Huntsville Center won first place in the Team Redstone Hispanic display contest and Warren Harper placed second in the Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest.
