One of the 35,000 seeds spread over an ordnance impact area. The seeds germinated in about one week with tall fescue and perennial rye. The grass covers the impact area on Cranberry Mountain at West Point, N.Y., is pocked with craters from mortar and artillery explosions. Agronomist Tim Cary at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research Laboratory in Burlington, Vt. and workers at the Army’s Aberdeen Test Center in Maryland worked together to create the seed balls that could were mechanically distributed across the area by radio controlled agricultural equipment contracted by U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s Ordnance and Explosives Design Center.
