HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--Each year on the third Monday of January, we observe and reflect on the work of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how his sacrifices, goodwill and perseverance blazed the trail for civil rights and racial equity in America.
When racial tensions were high, and segregation, disenfranchisement and injustice were the norm, Dr. King envisioned an America where equality, unity and prosperity were the new norm. Dr. King brought people together around a common cause—one we’re still honoring and fighting for in the U.S. and around the world today. By championing peaceful and nonviolent activism, he changed the trajectory of American society.
Standing on the shoulders of Dr. King and others who lost their lives in the fight for equality, we must reflect on the experiences of those before us while also looking forward. The fight for civil rights is far from over. It is up to us to continue fighting for equality and justice for all. This MLK Day, ask yourself, “What’s one step can I take today to honor Dr. King’s teaching?” Whether big or small, January 17 is not a day off but a day to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.
Huntsville Center employees are invited to attend a virtual MLK Day celebration January 20. The theme for the celebration is “Remember. Celebrate. Act. A day on, never a day off.” The link for the event will be sent out via email.
