    Evan Meier, the son of Thomas and Katherine Meier, and 6th grade student uses his 3D printer to create face masks and face shields for local hospital workers. Inspired by his aunt and YouTube program, "Smarter Every Day," the youth joined forces with 235 other Huntsville, Alabama, volunteers to make over 3,800 shields for area health care and first responders treating COVID-19 patients.

    Evan’s interest in making the masks, then face shields began earlier in March when his aunt sent them a link to a community project in Boston where they were making 3D filtered masks. That message resonated with the young student “engineer.”

    Huntsville Center employs 'engineering solution' to track operation orders

    When Russ Dunford sketched his idea onto a napkin, little did he realize that it would take two years and an engineering solution to bring it to fruition. There were times, he admits, when he questioned whether a solution was even possible. Despite any misgivings, the chief of Operations, U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, persisted. There had to be some sort of process to track and update operation orders, taskings and follow-on responses.

  • The U.S. Army team received this year’s Federal Energy Management Program Director’s Award for executing over $1 billion in performance contracts leading all federal agencies in the Presidents Performance Contracting Challenge of $4 billion by 2016 at the ceremony Dec. 7, 2016, in Washington, D.C.
