    Collaboration key for design contract replacing critical infrastructure at Spaceport

    Although there are no fixed or rotary wing aircraft assigned to Vandenberg, various transient aircraft often use their 15,000 ft. runway to deliver high-value assets such as expendable boosters, and other rocket and missile materiel. For a space force base serving as critical hub for national defense and U.S. space operations, its air traffic is controlled from a tower built in 1953—five years prior to the establishment of NASA.

    The project’s goal is to provide resilience through the microgrid and energy storage systems to power 40 percent of its critical facilities. The contract also addresses water infrastructure and security needs while decreasing energy and water consumption.

    Workers install portions of the 8.5 megawatt-per-hour battery system at Fort Carson, Colorado. Huntsville Center’s Energy Savings Performance Contracting program coordinated the project designed to reduce peak electricity use costs, especially during the summer cooling season.

    Energy savings virtual workshop sees attendance nearly double

    The workshop assists in helping the Army achieve mission effectiveness and achieve mandates imposed by laws and Department of Defense regulations by integrating energy programs, initiatives and activities.

    Energy savings contract revitalizes airfield

    In 2019 Huntsville Center awarded a fully funded $5.4 million modification to the contract’s task order to improve mission readiness and secure infrastructure by upgrading lighting and replacing decades- old wiring on Fort Knox’s Godman Army Airfield.

    Facilities Reduction Program continues to deliver the program through virtual contracting

    Even programs that generally require intensive on-site visits are finding innovative solutions to maintain the high level of quality expected of Huntsville Center. One example is the Facilities Reduction Program (FRP), which provides contracting services and oversight of projects to eliminate excess facilities and structures at installations across the country, ultimately leading to a reduction in fixed installation costs and an increase in energy savings.

    Resource Efficiency Managers support modernization of defense industrial base

    At the forefront of this mission is the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s Resource Efficiency Manager (REM) program, which brings the best minds in the free world together to introduce new technologies and processes that extract every possible unit of energy from the most fuel-efficient and resilient energy-system technologies available. REMs, often called the “energy boots on the ground,” provide vital expertise to develop site energy plans encompassing projects that achieve sustainable, renewable, and secure energy management.

    With 579 facilities totaling more than 10 million square feet of facility space, Rachel Kemper, REM for the U.S. Army Reserve’s 88th Readiness Division, headquartered on Fort McCoy, Wis., continues to deliver the program and exceeded energy savings goals for the 88th RD throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

Puerto Rico has a high average yearly rainfall, and the clinic's potable water system can provide potable water to the clinic for 14 days independently if needed.

    Center closes fiscal 2019 with $2 billion in obligations

    Of the $2.2 billion obligated, 44% went to support the Army and 37% for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Nine percent was dedicated to Army Corps of Engineers Information Technology. Four percent was earmarked for the Air Force and 3% for the Navy, and projects for NASA came in at 1%. More than $25 million was obligated in grants and cooperative agreements.
