    A class of 41 park rangers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers attend the first in-person training offered at the new USACE Learning Center. The center, which opened its doors for mission-critical courses in May, is located in Building 100 Secured Gateway.

    New USACE Learning Center opens doors for in-person classes

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Learning Center is now offering in-person instruction for mission-critical courses at its new location at Redstone Gateway. The center, which provides technical and professional training for USACE and other government agencies, moved from the Bevill Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville to the first floor of Building 100 Secured Gateway in March. However, all classes were held virtually until May due to COVID-19 restrictions.

    The U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s Communications Infrastructure and Systems Support program, or CIS2, provided design and renovation support U.S. Army North’s Building 44.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s Facilities Reduction team has transitioned to virtual site visits in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring the satisfaction of stakeholders.     Facilities Reduction Program continues to deliver the program through virtual contracting

    Even programs that generally require intensive on-site visits are finding innovative solutions to maintain the high level of quality expected of Huntsville Center. One example is the Facilities Reduction Program (FRP), which provides contracting services and oversight of projects to eliminate excess facilities and structures at installations across the country, ultimately leading to a reduction in fixed installation costs and an increase in energy savings.

    Center closes fiscal 2019 with $2 billion in obligations

    Of the $2.2 billion obligated, 44% went to support the Army and 37% for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Nine percent was dedicated to Army Corps of Engineers Information Technology. Four percent was earmarked for the Air Force and 3% for the Navy, and projects for NASA came in at 1%. More than $25 million was obligated in grants and cooperative agreements.

As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ agent for facility design and construction of all chemical demilitarization facilities, Huntsville Center has a long history building the facilities used to destroy chemical weapons, including BGCAPP.

    Airmen perform last-minute checks on a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft before it takes from Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea. Huntsville Center’s Fuels team cleaned, inspected and repaired a fuel storage tank used to hold and dispense a jet fuel created specifically for the reconnaissance aircraft, an important part of the Air Force’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission enterprise.

    Huntsville Center’s Fuels team had a very short period of time to clean, inspect and repair a fuel storage tank used to hold and dispense Jet Propellant Thermally Stable, a jet fuel created specifically for the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft.

    The majority of the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s employees are now working from the Center’s new location at 475 Quality Circle, in the Thornton Research Park. However, one of the Center’s directorates and several other Center divisions and program offices are remaining in office suites geographically detached from the Center.

    Some Center missions remain in University Square office suites

    The Center’s Ordnance and Explosives Directorate, its Installation Support and Programs Management Directorate’s Military Support, Facilities and Electronic Technology divisions and its Engineering Directorate’s Environmental Protection, Utilities and Geosciences offices are remaining behind in leased office suites near the Center’s old main facility at 4820 University Square.
